Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is a modality that is mostly known for the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). As part of EMDR treatment, utilizing talk therapy is not as required as it is in other therapeutic models. One of the principles of EMDR therapy is that psychopathology originates from early traumatic life experiences. Therefore, it seeks to manage and heal the dysfunctional effects of your past experiences. During the therapeutic session, bilateral movements are used. You will be required to move your eyes from side to side while being prompted to remember the traumatic experience in a safe space. The bilateral movements cause the eyes to move from left to right, which stimulates the opposite hemispheres of the brain. Also, throughout EMDR therapy, you will be supported with modifying any negative thoughts about the traumatic event. As a result, it has been observed that people will engage in helpful and productive behaviors, thus diminishing the adverse effects of the traumatic experience. The goal of EMDR is to help reduce the emotional charge of traumatic memories and experiences. EMDR therapy can also be used for anxiety disorders, depression, and panic attacks.
